The Smithsonian National Zoo, commonly known as the National Zoo, is one of the oldest zoos in the United States. It is part of the Smithsonian Institution, and there is no charge for admission. Founded in 1889, the zoo's primary mission is to provide leadership in animal care, science, education, sustainability and visitor experience. The Smithsonian's National Zoo has two sites, the first of which covers 66 hectares northwest of downtown Washington. Another campus, the 1,300-hectare Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Flat Royal, Va., is closed to the public and dedicated to wildlife training for conservation purposes. And breeding rare animals through natural methods. The Smithsonian's National Zoo has 2,000 animals of 400 different species in its two parks, one-fifth of which are endangered. Most of the animals can be seen at Zoo's Rock Creek Park, where the most famous animal is the giant panda, along with a variety of birds, gorillas, big cats, Asian elephants, insects, amphibians, reptiles, aquatic animals and small mammals. It is worth mentioning that there is Bao Bao, a giant panda sent by China, which is very popular.
