Jazz Legends gather for a jam session of the ages led by vocalist and legend herself LEANNA! Each week is a rotating roster of national favorites, local talent, and up and coming jazz stars. Follow us on instagram @psculturalcenter for who's up this week! NOV 8 - Joining Leanna and Miguel will be Billy Chiechi on piano, Scott Strecker on horn, Jay Lewis on drums and Kenyon Carter on sax. HOSTS Leanna | vocals Leanna is an award-nominated entertainer with residencies with her husband/conga player Miguel Gomez at V Lounge, 'Jazz on the 2nd Floor' (Palm Springs Cultural Center), and produces 'Drag Pop' a Drag/Burlesque Cabaret. Often called by fans the modern day Ricky & Lucy - due to their comedic stage personas and show business partnership. Highlights including shows at Frank Sinatra Estate and opening the Playboy Jazz Festival at The Hollywood Bowl. She holds a BA Degree - Theatre Arts from CSULB. Miguel Gomez | congas Miguel has been playing congas professionally for five years and holds a BA Degree in Interior Design. Since a very young age, he has performed live on stage in Miami, and in his native Colombia. He currently holds residencies at V Lounge, Jazz on the 2nd Floor | Palm Springs Cultural Center, and other venues throughout the Coachella Valley. JAZZ COLLECTIVE ROSTER (Featured Band Members) Wayne Boyer | piano & flugelhorn Wayne Boyer has had the honor of working as musician and musical director for many major artist and entertainers such as Jose Feliciano, Charo, Debbie Reynolds, Frankie Avalon, Jimmy Smith, and Diane Schuur. On any given show, you can see Wayne playing the piano, flugelhorn, and left-peddle bass SIMULTANEOUSLY. He has arranged and produced many recordings for famously known artist and top television shows. Leon Bisquera | piano Leon has played with Chaka Khan and toured with Anita Baker and Randy Crawford (Streetlife) collectively for 15 yrs. He also has 2 Gold Records with Boney James. Andy Fraga | drums Andy Fraga has worked with notable names such as Diane Schuur, Tom Scott, Jennifer Holliday, Laurence Hobgood, Kurt Elling, Chadwick Johnson, Jonathan Karrant, and Audra McDonald, including performances at Kennedy Center's 25th Anniversary (aired on PBS), Havana Jazz Festival, Jazz in the Pines, and San Francisco Jazz Festival, and notable venues all over the region, including Melvyn's, Purple Room, The Show, and Jazz At The 12th Floor Lounge, just to name a few. Lewis Jones | drums Lewis hails from Ohio, is a professor of music and has performed in the US and Europe with groups such as Manchester Camerata and the BBC Orchestra. He is currently the drummer for Desert Winds Freedom Band and performs regularly at PS Underground and with Keisha D - Soulful Sundays at the Palm Springs Cultural Center. Joe Canoura | flute & sax Joe Canoura's great claim to fame is that he was featured on the Ray Barretto's Latin crossover hit, the boogaloo El Watusi, which went to Number 17 on the American pop charts in 1963. https://youtu.be/HBlQ48m8UuM He played with Tito Puente during his last tour before his passing, at the House of Blues - New Orleans. Tito was overheard telling Joe during that show, "I see you still got your chops". As Fredy Omar (The New Orleans Latin King of Frenchmen Street) recounts: "we opened a show for Tito Puente at the House of Blues and when we got there, Tito's band was doing a soundcheck. The pianist, Sonny Bravo, he was going, 'Joe? Oh my God! Joe Canoura!' Tito Puente had a lot of veterans playing with him and all the guys knew Joe." Notable venues include: The Palladium in NYC, Jazzfest - New Orleans. Caribe Hilton - Old San Juan, Carnegie Hall, Club Virginia - Los Angeles. Joe also played with Puerto Rico famed Trumpeter Miguelito Miranda. Kenyon Carter | Sax Kenyon Carter is an internationally acclaimed saxophonist and recording artist specializing in jazz, R&B, and pop. His music can be heard on contemporary jazz radio around the world, ahd he also performs locally throughout Southern California. With 25+ years of experience as an arranger, composer, and producer, Kenyon also creates custom music for film and television, writes custom arrangements for other artists, and offers musical transcription services for individual musicians up to Big Bands. James Gastelum | bass A desert native from Indio, James studied jazz performance at Northern Illinois University, and is the leader of piano trio Black Market Jazz. Doug MacDonald | Guitar There are some musicians who earn the label “a players player”. Individuals who possess a quality and integrity that peers look up to, not for mere bursts of blazing notes or chops, but for the perfection of their performances and the joy they bring. Such a musician is West coast based Jazz journeyman guitarist Doug MacDonald. Tokens can be used at this event and at any of our other events when the bar is open.
