Description

Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to the Nahua Indigenous man Juan Diego on a deserted hilltop near present-day Mexico City in the wee hours in the middle of December 1531. What was it about her that engendered such trust and affection in this humble man that would give him the courage to carry out her wish to visit the highest ranking official of the Catholic Church in Mexico? And why did her image result in in millions of conversions among the Indigenous, and reconversions among the Spaniards? Every detail of her image, from the way she wears her hair, to the stars on her mantle, to the angel at her feet; even the clouds around her carried a coded message to the Indigenous of who knew the ways of Aztec thought and culture. About Presenter: Juanita Salazar Lamb earned her master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma and wrote her thesis on La Virgen de Guadalupe in Contemporary Chicano Culture: Images in Art and Literature. She continued her advanced studies through the Institute for Advanced Guadalupan Studies at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City and received the postgraduate diploma from the Pontific University of Mexico
