Archiving Ones Life & Affects

I am hoping to get some advice regarding archiving ones life and personal affects. I am finding this to be a more daunting task than I initially imagined. The various potential products/tools involved has my head spinning and though I've been doing some reading on the topic I'm still finding myself unsure. I'm looking to preserve things a bit better than simply having them stored in a cardboard or plastic box (which is what I've done thus far) but also I am on a budget so money is definitely an issue. Any recommendations/advice is appreciated. Thank you.
