Course Description
This advanced gait training and running program for individuals with lower extremity amputation (The Amputee Walking School) is offered by the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute in partnership with Dankmeyer, Inc. and Todd Schaffhauser and Dennis Oehler.
Participants will learn how to complete and how to teach the following:
• Exercises and stretches for Individuals of all ages with lower limb amputation and various levels of amputation.
• Treatment approaches for improved function and return to an active lifestyle.
• Instruction on advanced exercises and running techniques for individuals with above and below-knee amputation.
• Achieving best performance with an orthotic or prosthetic device
• The dynamics of how artificial prosthetics work
• How to use muscles properly to control prosthetic limbs
• To teach individuals with amputation to run, move from side-to-side, bend down, jump, climb stairs and walk with confidence.
The walking school applies hands-on participation techniques. Participants work through the full-range of stretching and strengthening exercises, assisted by a trained professional and/or their spouse/family member. Those individuals with more advanced skill are taught running techniques, while others have the opportunity to review the basic exercises and are shown advanced options to improve their walking gait.
Todd and Dennis are former Paralympic Athletes
