Description

A national park in the U.S. state of Nevada with the old Fort Mormon. This old brick Mormon house was home to one of the first non-natives to settle permanently in the Las Vegas Valley. A group of Mormon missionaries built this brick house along the Las Vegas River in 1855. Years later, the house was abandoned, but the remains of the original house remain as a visitor center that displays and provides historical information. With a variety of programs during the summer, it's an ideal place for families to spend time together. Fort Mormon National Historic Park in Old Vegas is the only national park within an American city and the city's first landmark. The historic forts that remain are unremarkable, but they mark the place where Las Vegas was first built. A small courtyard enclosed in adobe provides a refuge for travelers who once walked along the Mormon Trail. Some of the original walls are still standing, and the visitor center displays some of the early artworks and photographs for current visitors. Outside, there are replicas of the original crops grown at the Las Vegas Ranch, which survived for ten years after the Mormons abandoned them. Today it is dusty and perhaps only fascinating to historians.
