Description

Kwanzaa is a Swahili word that means "first" and signifies the first fruits of the harvest. The Festival begins on December 26 and lasts for seven days. Kwanzaa is a celebration of community, family, and culture, established as a means to help African Americans reconnect with their African roots and heritage. Kwanzaa is based on seven principles (Nguzo Saba) The principles: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination, Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose) Kuumba (creativity) and Imani (faith). Each of the seven candles signifies the principles. The event on Tuesday, December 27th will focus on the second Principle of Kwanzaa Kujichagulia (self-determination) encourages African Americans to define themselves and speak for themselves.
