You are correct in that Christianity was not made the state religion, that's what they meant when they stated to the Barbary Pirates that they were not a Christian nation, i.e. France and Spain who had Catholic governments.
However the USA was founded on Judeo-Christian principles, ethics and morals. Democracy only works when those 3 are practiced. Is what Dubya couldn't understand why democracy didn't work in Iraq and Muslim nations.
If you remove Judeo-Christians from the equation, there will be no more United States of America.
