MIDDLETOWN, RI — Middletown Public Schools will resume in-person classes on Monday, Jan. 11 as scheduled, said the district in an announcement Thursday. All grades switched to distance learning on Dec. 21 ahead of winter break due to the surge in COVID-19 cases experienced in Rhode Island at the end of 2020. Students had a total of eight distance learning days over the three-week period. "We know that our behavior over the next few weeks will critically impact a successful and safe return to our classrooms in 2021," said Superintendent Rosemarie Kraeger in a letter to parents and guardians ahead of the break. The district said students in grades K-5 will continue in-person classes on Monday, while grades 6-12 will move back to the hybrid learning model. Middletown Public Schools also announced on Thursday that the high school will be hosting a free asymptomatic COVID-19 testing day on Wednesday, Jan. 31 from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. The clinic will be open to Middletown High School staff and students only. Those who wish to participate can sign up here.
