The Gumbo Foundation 17th Annual Gumbo Cook-Off beneficiary is twelve-year-old Maddox Lawrence. Maddox is the son of Michael and Dashawn Lawrence, alumni of Beau Chene High School. He has an older brother at home and a sister pursuing a medical degree in Baton Rouge. Maddox was admitted to a local hospital in Lafayette and transferred to Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital in Baton Rouge where he was diagnosed with Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma in June 2022. His tumor has shrunk through the power of prayer and treatment. However, he recently underwent major surgery St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN and will soon begin radiation treatment. All believe that it is Maddox’s positive attitude, energy, and strength that refuses to allow him to give up. His brother’s encouragement, his family’s prayers, & the support of the community is truly working above all else.
