For many of us when we speak of American whiskies our thoughts automatically turn to Bourbon and Rye, and it is true that we at Vine & Table are great proponents of both. In recent years, however, many distilleries in the states have been trying their hands at the old world tradition of the single malt, and some of the results have been stellar. One distillery in particular has made its name on the style and is generally considered to be leading the pack when it comes to American single malt whiskey. That distillery is Westland Distilling out of Seattle Washington.
Given that Seattle is situated directly in the middle of two of the best barley growing regions in the world it makes sense that Westland chose to enter the whiskey-making game with a single malt. What they produced, however, has stunned even those who first suggested the idea. Merging old world techniques with a new world streak of innovation Westland has managed to create a line that manages to pay homage to the lands of whiskey's birth while still being uniquely American. Whether you prefer the smooth finish of their sherry cask finish, the smoky sweet notes of their locally sourced peated malt, or the masterpiece that is the world's only example of Garryana aged whiskey there is sure to be a Westland product that is just right for you.
Of course, you don't have to take my word for it. In addition to stocking up on this fantastic line of whiskies we have arranged a private tasting in our event room. Tuesday, November 22nd from 5-7 we will be turning our event room over to our friends from Remy -Cointreau to highlight the offerings of this premier distiller. Seating will be limited so sign up for your place early.
