Description
OKC Beautiful's Sustainability Social Hour is for those who love the environment and our city. Each session is centered around networking with those who have a passion for and want to learn more about environmental stewardship topics. Each session features a Q&A with a guest speaker. December’s session features Environmental Attorney Mary Ellen Ternes, Partner with Earth & Water Law, LLC and Senior Fellow for Law and Policy for the Global Council for Science and Environment, for a discussion on the national and global status of plastic pollution law and policy, how this will impact Oklahoma and what you can do. Plastic is produced by chemical processes designed by chemical engineers. Before her career in environmental law, Mary Ellen was first a chemical engineer, Vanderbilt University, B.E. (ChE) 1984, working for the U.S. EPA and industry in emergency response, hazardous waste site remediation and beneficial waste recovery, treatment and destruction. In her unique legal career, Mary Ellen combines chemical engineering and environmental law to optimize science-based policy and legal solutions, especially now for plastic pollution. Mary Ellen is a national and international leader of policy and legal projects to address plastic pollution, speaking and publishing frequently, as Fellow and former President of the American College of Environmental Lawyers; Fellow and leader of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers; Senior Fellow for Law; Policy of the Global Council for Science and Environment; contributor to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine plastic pollution projects; member and past leader of the American Bar Association’s Sections of Environment, Energy and Resources and Business Law. Locally, Mary Ellen’s peers have voted her as Oklahoma City’s Best Lawyers® “Lawyer of the Year” for Environmental Law in 2011, 2016, 2019 and 2023, and for Administrative and Regulatory Law in 2020. All ages are welcome! You do not have to be 21+ to attend. Sustainability Social Hour is every second Wednesday of the month. Location changes each month.
