I have learned in life that those who never have attended college, label it as "liberal," or "comprised of privileged white kids." Pity. I am neither and found college to be neither as well. Free speech is a wondrous gift our forefathers allotted us. It does, however, carry with it responsibilities. The obvious is the "fire in a theater" metaphor. But it also has a social responsibility. You can't commit libel or slander for instance. Berlin in 1930 was a worldwide example of being the epicenter of culture, free speech and new ideas. But by allowing just about anything to be said, it ushered in an era where monsters took over; a group who then suppressed all speech not favorable to the ruling elite. When colleges who traditionally welcome all sorts of radical thought left and right be allowed forbids a speaker, it is time in my humble opinion to examine why.
