Snuggle Up with a Good Book: An Early Literacy Fundraising Event

The 2023 Early Literacy Fundraiser, Snuggle Up with a Good Book, raises money for children's literacy programs at the Halifax County-South Boston Public Library System. There will be food provided by Southern Plenty and wine provided by Hunting Creek Vineyards. Local artists were asked to illustrate children's books in paintings. The images from these paintings were transferred to pillowcases. Each pillowcase has been given a pillow and paired with a blanket, a stuffed, animal, and a copy of the book. These complete packages will be up for bid in the event's silent auction. The American Library Association has stated that "A study of 3-to 5-year-olds who had been read to at least three times per week found the children: Two times more likely to recognize all letters.Two times more likely to have word-sight recognition.Two times more likely to understand words in context."Early literacy efforts prepare children for success in school and in life.
