Description

This course is designed for the new boater as well as the amateur. Learn to read and use a chart properly, learn to use the navigation tools correctly and gain the ability to plot a course to your favorite destination(s). Learn how much time it will take to your destination, or how far away it is so can enjoy the beautiful sights along our beautiful coastline and visit our “Island Park” system safely and with confidence. Take our “1-day – all-day” Navigation 101 Classroom Course to gain the knowledge of safe boating navigation principles, develop the skills needed to navigate the waters of Narragansett Bay and its surrounding waterways and tributaries. Learn the fundamentals of Latitude and Longitude. Learn some history of navigation theory, learn what navigation tools are available and how to use them, learn how to read a nautical chart, learn how to apply these navigation techniques and skills by plotting dead reckoning course on your own chart. We furnish the navigation tools and charts for you to use during the class. Learn how to measure distances and avoid danger areas. Learn how to read a nautical chart to determine what the terminology and symbols mean when using a nautical chart. Learn how to calculate and solve Time, Speed, and Distance problems to ensure that you will arrive at your planned destination in a safe and timely manner. GPS units are a great tool to have but without power they are as useful as a bottomless coffee cup. You need to know the basics of navigation and that is what this classroom course will offer you. This course is presented at the RI DEM (Foundry Complex) 235 Promenade Street, Providence, RI 02908 Room 300. Pre-registration is required. Class size is limited to 10 persons per session.
