Description

The dark-season nights are creeping in as the autumn leaves are sharing their final bold paintings. The energy is returning back to the roots of the plants and the frost has kissed the ground, so now is the time to harvest the below earth gifts of garden & field. The medicine is most potent and concentrated in the roots during the long nights, and reflects the remedies' support to our bodies during this season. Just as we are turning our focus inward during the darker moons of the year, so too the plants' magic returns to the shadows below. Nature always offers just what we need in rhythm & tune with the cycles. Garden gate opens at 10:45am. We will meet at the patio picnic table promptly at 11am to have warm herbal tea & begin our class sharing. After introductions; of each other, herbal medicine, & preparations we will be creating together; we will take a brief walk through the garden. On our walk we will identify the root medicine plants by their dried stalks & seed heads, and explore how to grow, divide, & gather their roots reverently and sustainably. With our mindfully harvested samples in basket, we will head to the classroom to process the roots for crafting herbal remedies together. Bring your favorite tea mug, a notebook with writing utensil, plant tale, and hand pruner &/or harvest basket, if you have them. Leave with connections & a full heart. Some plants we may meet & gather include: solomon's seal, echinacea, chicory, dandelion, plantain, burdock, & elecampane. Five scholarship tickets are available for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color). Email [email protected] to claim one! **Note: Dress for the weather and insects. We are also accepting donations of pint or smaller size glass jars with lids. Thank you & we look forward to seeing you in the garden! Located in Fulton, Maryland, The Green Farmacy Garden is a sanctuary for approximately 300 native and non-native species of plants that have been used traditionally and/or researched for medicinal applications. USDA botanist James A. Duke, PhD, and his wife, Peggy, collected medicinal plants for over sixty years. In 1997, they transformed part of their pasture land into a teaching garden highlighting the plants that are featured in Jim’s book, The Green Pharmacy. The Green Farmacy Garden is also a part of the United Plant Savers network of sanctuaries around the country, which strive to educate the public and maintain native plant species that have become at risk or endangered.
