Description

A strong community is built on the premise that residents hold a genuine, mutual respect for one another and have a strong commitment to understanding and standing up for all its members. The recent rise in hate crimes and incidents that have posed a threat to the safety and civility of South Bay neighborhoods and beyond is driving our local community to create an open dialogue around the dangers of hate and the need for respect and civil discourse among all residents. The documentary film, RACE to be Human, invites viewers to engage in this important global conversation and addresses the apprehension and confusion so many of us feel when it comes to talking about race and racism. The film not only examines micro-aggressions, allyship, and the role of social media, but also shares how we can promote curiosity, self-reflection, and empathy through conversations at home, school and work so that we are all more aware, and as communities, we can promote a more inclusive and equitable society. Following the 46-minute film, there will be a panel discussion and question & answer session among South Bay students, experts, and educators to encourage an open dialogue around race. Moderator Sherry Hayes Peirce, Member of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ Anti-Racism Task Force and the American Martyrs Catholic Community Panelists Janet Allen, MCHS School Psychologist Eva Asiddao, Mira Costa High School Student Activist and ArtistRabbi Yossi Mintz, Director of Jewish Community Center ChabadMegan Nevels, MFA, Associate Education Director, ADL Los Angeles This event is a collaboration between the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation, the South Bay Community Coalition Against Hate, and the Anti-Defamation League as a part of United Against Hate Week.
