November is Native American Heritage Month, or as it is commonly referred to, American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month. The month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. Learn more about indigenous people, their culture, their lives on Nov. 15 from 2 pm to 5 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Oak Cliff, 3839 W. Kiest Blvd., Dallas. The event is free. The featured speaker of this event is activist Yolonda Blue Horse. The Mitotiliztli Yaoyollohili Mexihca Nahuati Dancers will perform their traditional dances. An Indigenous activist based in Dallas, Yolonda Blue Horse is a Rosebud Sioux Tribal member who co-founded the Society of Native Nations in Texas, an advocacy group for Native people and the earth by helping to protect and preserve culture, spirituality, teachings, medicine, and way of life. Through awareness and education of our culture and spirituality, the Society believes people can better understand and respect one another to create unity. Yolonda has also organized campaigns against harmful energy companies, sexual violence, & racist mascots. Mitotiliztli Yaoyollohili Mexihca Nahuati is one of the most basic manifestations of the artistic and cultural spirit of the native people of Mexico.
