Mama Irene is the original Peruvian curandera. Join us at Haw Creek Commons in a spirit of community as we experience the power and beauty of this powerful grandmother healer. Our evening will begin with an optional potluck dinner, followed by the movie screening and discussion afterwards. The documentary follows Mama Irene in her everyday life, highlighting her healing methods and passion to serve each patient who knocks on her door. Accompany Mama Irene on ancient spiritual ceremonies such as the Snow Star Festival in the Sinakara Valley high in the Peruvian Andes. The film is not only a vital document of endangered wisdom: it is also a story about Women empowerment and how to live in harmony with Mother Earth. As the film unfolds, we learn about Mama Irene's personal journey as she fought patriarchy and embraced her healing power. Irene discovered her healing gift by chance at three years old, when she intuitively healed a neighbor's migraines. She was sold by her father into slavery and beaten by her husband who was determined to keep her in the role of servile female. She gave birth to 15 children, eight of whom died. She endured misogyny and rivalry from male shamans. Yet Mama Irene never waivered in pursuing her craft. She believed in herself and in the gift she was born with. This is a story about a woman who overcomes tremendous trauma and obstacles and continues to grow and inspire at age 84. Afterwards we will engage in a community discussion as to how we can carry the message of Mama Irene out into the world. Note: This movie has English subtitles.
