Description
What's the game? -It's called Guess the Year. It's recorded remotely over Zoom, with video (but only the audio will be released). We've only released three episodes and it's already a top 250 music podcast in America, and the magazine Relix is planning to profile the show. How does the game work? -The host (me) will play the first minute or so of a Grateful Dead live track, at which point each of the five contestants will submit a guess as to what year it was performed based on the vocals, piano style, song choice, or myriad other clues. The guesses will be submitted via Zoom's messaging feature, which is to say silently, just like in Final Jeopardy. Once all the guesses are submitted, the contestant who's furthest from the actual year will be eliminated. This process is repeated until there are only 2 contestants remaining. Said contestants will then have a best of 3 series to determine the winner, who will be invited to defend their title on the next show. Do I get paid? -The winner gets a $50 REI gift card. I realize this isn't much. I'm currently bankrolling this thing myself. But it's a really good time and a great chance to talk some Dead. And if you feel good about your knowledge then the $50 gift card is very much winnable. When will the show record? -We have three sessions we're casting for (all at 6pm PT/9pm ET). This Thursday, 11/10 Next Tuesday, 11/15 Next Wednesday, 11/16 Please reach out if you're available for any of them. -How will it record? Over Zoom. -How long will it take? -No more than 45 minutes. Likely only 30 minutes. Do I need a USB microphone? -A microphone would be great, but no, not necessarily. However, you do need headphones with a microphone (like Airpods, the wired ones that come with every iPhone, or some non-Apple version of that). This is for both sound quality reasons and to show you aren’t cheating by using Shazam. Obviously a $50 gift card isn’t worth cheating for, but I hope the prize grows drastically and I want to implement a solid foundation of rules. Can I hear how the game is played? Yes! The first two episodes are up. Here's the Apple Podcasts link to the show: I'm interested. What do I do now? -Email us with your first name, hometown, age, email address, and which session you'd like to participate in. I'm only asking for this personal information because it's how I introduce you on the show. Knowing a bit about you helps the audience connect/pick who to root for. NFA, Mike, the host
