Dr. Nigel Lockyer is a leading voice in the field of high-energy particle physics. Born in Scotland and raised in Canada, Nigel has served as director of two of the most prestigious scientific research facilities in North America.
In a one-hour conversation with Matt Ehlman, PhD, of The Numad Group, Nigel will discuss his continued search for discovery, his drive to answer the universe’s big questions, and the potential impact of this work on local, regional, and national economies.
Nigel’s widely recognized expertise as a particle physicist has centered on one of the smallest building blocks in the universe, the bottom quark. For his work on the bottom quark, he was awarded the American Physical Society’s W.K.H. Panofsky Prize in 2006.
In 2013, Nigel was appointed director of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab). Fermilab is America’s premier national laboratory for particle physics research and one of the most important scientific research facilities in the world. After more than eight years, Nigel retired this spring from Fermilab.
In January of this year, Nigel received one of the most distinguished honors given by the United Kingdom. The late Queen Elizabeth II named Nigel Officer of the Order of the British Empire, one of the highest ranks in the nation’s order of chivalry.
