321 Washington Street near Art Center and Gallery, Cambridge MA

Description

Washington Street is a cooperative artist studio building and gallery/event space in Union Square, Somerville. We are seeking a visual artist member to fill a studio vacancy and we are specifically looking for an artist who is interested in being part of our community. We function as a collective, working in committees to manage the space and plan events. The available studio is 178 sq ft and is $455/month. It is on the second floor of our building, faces South, has overhead storage, as well as wall-shelf storage and some of best light in the building :) There is a large bathroom around the corner with a large slop sink. There are 2-4 steps leading into the building and the second floor is accessible only by stairs. Rent is inclusive of wifi and all utilities, and you may access your studio 24/7. Please note, studios may not be used as music practice spaces and our lease does not allow kilns. We are located about a 10-minute walk from the Union Square T-stop. The #86 bus stops across the street, and several other buses (83, 85, 87, 91, CT2) stop nearby at the intersection of Washington and Beacon Streets. If you have a car, you can park in the lot behind the building on weekends with a studio pass; on weekdays, street parking is available with either a Somerville resident parking permit or a Somerville Artist parking permit. We seek to include members of different backgrounds and our community is enriched by the participation of artists who bring their different identities (race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation and gender identity, age, ability, artistic discipline, life experience, etc.) to the space. We are committed to building a more welcoming environment for artists whose identities may leave them systematically excluded from arts institutions. Things are still a bit different due to the pandemic repercussions, but we are back to hosting masked events, gallery shows, performances, workshops, and any creative projects our members dream up. We are active participants in Somerville Open Studios. At the moment we are conducting interviews with potential members via Zoom. Please fill out the form on our web page by mid-August. Please answer all questions and include a link to images of your work. We will get in touch in the next few weeks if we are interested in setting up a virtual interview with you at this time.
