The first-generation Filipino-American, born and raised South of Market, got caught up with gangs, guns, and drugs in the neighborhood and was in and out of jail for years in the early '90s. As an ex-felon, Rudy got involved in the Second Chance program of the Extended Opportunity Program Services (EOPS) at SF City College. United Playaz was able to recently purchase their building, and Rudy is now a stakeholder in Soma and is working hard to build up the community. “I was a destroyer of my community, and now I’m a stakeholder and builder of my community.” Rudy feels blessed to serve with the people and believes strongly in the UP motto that “It takes the hood to save the hood.” Moderator: Joe Canton, Ph.D., UC Irvine Dr. Canton is a featured facilitator and professional public speaker, known throughout the United States for speaking on issues of race and a broad range of topics.
