My best guess for your question, "...Why didn't we do it in 2016?" Answer: Those who could do it didn't think they had to in 2016. It's quite possible they made sure the bad orange guy got nominated in 2016. Then their "shoe-in" candidate would win without the risk or cost of stealing a presidential election. That of course, is a possible reason. Just like the possible reason you hate the orange guy is because you were told to do so.
