Gateway Korea Foundation and The Very Asian Foundation will host a screening of the documentary film Free Chol Soo Lee and post-film discussion featuring experts in criminal justice and media. The event is free to the public. Premiering at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, Free Chol Soo Lee tells the tragic story of a Korean American immigrant sentenced to death for a murder in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Filmmakers Julie Ha and Eugene Yi delve into Chol Soo Lee’s fight for his freedom and the advocacy of the Asian American community in overturning his wrongful conviction. Following the film, GKF and VAF will host a panel discussion featuring St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell, MacArthur Justice Center Co-Director and founder of the Missouri Wrongful Conviction Project Megan Crane, St. Louis Post Dispatch journalist Aisha Sultan, and former reporter for NPR St. Louis and Executive Editor at Euclid Media Group Sarah Fenske. The event will be held on Friday, November 18, 2022 on Webster University’s campus at the Winifred Moore Auditorium, 470 E. Lockwood Ave., Webster Groves, MO 63119. Doors open at 6 P.M. with the film beginning at 7 P.M. and the post-film discussion to follow immediately thereafter. The event is free to the public, and tickets are not required, but guests are encouraged to pre-register on Eventbrite to ensure a seat due to limited seating capacity.
