THE UNION This year, the two biggest festivals for Dia de los Muertos in the metropolitan area decide to unite their voices and send a message to the nation: UNITED WE ARE STRONGER. Dia de los Muertos DC and Dia de los Muertos DMV (Basilis Empire) have joined forces to coproduce our citywide Dia de los Muertos “UNITED WE ARE STRONGER” Benefit Festival on the Washington Monument Grounds in Washington, DC, to be held on Saturday, November 5, 2020. The purpose of this event is to raise funding resources and awareness to help reunite the children who have been separated at the border with their families, advocate for unaccompanied minors crossing the border, as well as providing support for children of marginalized communities abroad to reduce the dire need to leave their home countries and face the risk of injury, death and/or being detained. THE FESTIVAL With everything going on in the world recently, we will be paying tribute to the Dia de los Muertos holiday where family and friends come together in fellowship to remember and celebrate the lives of their passed loved ones. “Dia de los Muertos” is a holiday that represents a custom that we all can relate to. Our mission is to share the true meaning and tradition of the holiday with all cultures since, no matter our differences or ethnic backgrounds, each and every one of us have loved ones to remember and honor. In death, we are all the same, and we wish to continue sharing this custom through our presence in the DC Metropolitan Area. By participating, this event will take you on a journey from the traditional roots of this holiday, teach you the significance of the various customs and traditions, expound upon the importance of unpacking grief through the empowerment and support of family and community, and show you the ways this holiday can be celebrated cross-culturally. It will also highlight various ways that you can get involved in giving back to your community, spread awareness of local community resources, encourage you to get out and VOTE, and share the understanding that if we are all the same in death, then there is more that unites us than divides us in life. During the festival, you will have the opportunity to experience a variety of family-friendly events which will include an expansive history of Dia de los Muertos, the sounds of Mariachi and other local vocal artists, dance performances, live art, workshop, community resources, a candlelit vigil, other traditional foods, customary activities, panel discussions, and more. Event Website: DDLMBENEFIT.COM WHO ARE WE We are Dia de los Muertos DC (DDLMDC), an organization founded to develop and produce community-building events around the traditions and customs of the Dia de los Muertos (A.K.A Day of the Dead) holiday. Our mission is to fundraise and support various social causes affecting the (black and brown or Hispanic and Latin) community, through teaching unity and oneness as we all experience death. By remembering and paying tribute to the ones that we all have loved and lost, educating the masses on the true traditional history of the holiday while showcasing the importance of these customs, we explore how Dia de los Muertos can be celebrated and embraced across cultures. We act together to improve the collective mental health of the country through the promotion of healing, build community and the capacity to process grief, while supporting our fellow human beings through the difficult mourning process by sharing local resources that are available to help the local community. PURPOSE: Due to previous policy actions, thousands of children have been torn away from their parents and held in “holding facilities” thousands of miles away for undetermined amounts of time. During this process, numerous children have been temporarily placed in the care of Social Services here in the United States. However, proper identification and documentation have not followed them, leaving a great number of them “lost” in the very system that they have been assigned to. Alongside these separated families, there are minors who cross the border unaccompanied in search of safer living conditions, who are also pulled into this very system without any path of recourse or support. “Children make up less than one third of the global population, but almost half among the world’s refugees in 2020. Today, nearly 1 in three living outside of their country’s of birth are child refugees; for adults, the proportion is less than 1 in 20.” – UNICEF Data Therefore, we have put together this festival in hopes of raising awareness, as well as gathering the needed funds to assist in the reunification of these separated families and advocating for these children who are here alone. It is also our mission to assist in establishing stronger communities abroad, in hopes that it will limit the need for these families to feel forced to leave their home countries and jeopardize falling into the current US Immigration/Border Patrol System. This event serves as a call to assist those who cannot help themselves – the children. Proceeds raised from this event will be going to the below listed organizations. OUR RECIPIENTS 1) The Young Center (https://www.theyoungcenter.org/about-the-young-center) The Young Center is a champion for the rights and best interests of unaccompanied immigrant children, making sure that wherever they land, whether here in the U.S. or in their home country, they are safe. The Young Center serves unaccompanied children who are fleeing violence, trafficking, abuse and extreme poverty. Advocates for the safety and well-being of each child, while they’re detained and throughout deportation proceedings—every step of the way. Stands for the creation of an immigration system that serves children. 2) Rostros Sabios. De mi Corazon a tu Corazon (rostrossabios.org) Rostros Sabios, De mi Corazon a tu Corazon is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to providing childcare, as well as educational, nutritional and medical services for the children of working mothers within marginalized communities. Their mission is to nurture the brains and bodies of young children to provide a foundation to ensure healthy development into future leaders within their surrounding communities. This program has been recognized by the UN as one of the strongest tools for social change and development within 3rd World countries. PETITION TO MAKE DDLM A NATIONAL HOLIDAY On October 30, 2020, the 45th Administration of the United States officially proclaimed November 1st as a National Day of Remembrance for Americans Killed by Illegal Aliens, directly coinciding with the Dia de Los Muertos holiday which takes place from November 1st – November 2nd. This proclamation came as a direct attempt to overwrite and re-characterize the heritage of millions of Hispanics and Latin Americans, creating further division throughout the country, switching the focus from family, community, and togetherness to hatred, resentment, and separatism. Our goal this November is to unite our community across the country, by including organizers, festival producers, activists, artists, local government officials, museum curators, historians, and communities in order to petition Congress to officially denounce this divisive proclamation and establish Dia de Los Muertos as a recognized holiday within the US. El Día de los Muertos DC y el Día de los Muertos DMV (Basilis Empire) han unido sus fuerzas para coproducir nuestro Festival Benéfico del Día de los Muertos "Unidos somos más fuertes" en el Monumento a Washington, DC, que se celebrará el sábado 5 de noviembre de 2020. El propósito de este evento es recaudar recursos de financiación y concientización para ayudar a reunir a los niños que han sido separados en la frontera con sus familias, abogar por los menores no acompañados que cruzan la frontera, así como proporcionar apoyo a los niños de las comunidades marginadas en el extranjero para reducir la extrema necesidad de abandonar sus países de origen y enfrentarse al riesgo de lesiones, muerte y/o ser detenidos. El "Día de los Muertos" es una fiesta que representa una costumbre con la que todos podemos relacionarnos. Nuestra misión es compartir el verdadero significado y la tradición de la fiesta con todas las culturas, ya que, sin importar nuestras diferencias u orígenes étnicos, todos y cada uno de nosotros tenemos seres queridos que recordar y honrar. En la muerte, todos somos iguales, y deseamos seguir compartiendo esta costumbre a través de nuestra presencia en el área metropolitana de DC. Recordando y rindiendo tributo a los que todos hemos amado y perdido, educando a las masas sobre la verdadera historia tradicional de la festividad mientras mostramos la importancia de estas costumbres, exploramos cómo el Día de los Muertos puede ser celebrado y acogido por todas las culturas. Actuamos juntos para mejorar la salud mental colectiva del país a través de la promoción de la creación, la construcción de la comunidad y la capacidad de procesar el duelo y la transición, mientras apoyamos a nuestros semejantes a través del difícil proceso de duelo compartiendo los recursos locales que están disponibles para ayudar a la comunidad local. PROPÓSITO: Debido a acciones políticas anteriores, miles de niños han sido arrancados de sus padres y retenidos en "instalaciones de retención" a miles de kilómetros de distancia durante un tiempo indeterminado. Durante este proceso, numerosos niños han sido colocados temporalmente al cuidado de los Servicios Sociales aquí en los Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, la identificación y la documentación adecuadas no les han seguido, dejando a un gran número de ellos "perdidos" en el propio sistema al que han sido asignados. Junto a estas familias separadas, hay menores que cruzan la frontera sin compañía en busca de condiciones de vida más seguras, que también se ven arrastrados a este mismo sistema sin ninguna vía de recurso o apoyo. Hoy en día, casi 1 de cada tres personas que viven fuera de su país de nacimiento son niños refugiados; en el caso de los adultos, la proporción es inferior a 1 de cada 20." - Datos de UNICEF Por lo tanto, hemos organizado este festival con la esperanza de sensibilizar a la población, así como de recaudar los fondos necesarios para ayudar a la reunificación de estas familias separadas y abogar por estos niños que están aquí solos. También es nuestra misión ayudar a establecer comunidades más fuertes en el extranjero, con la esperanza de que se limite la necesidad de que estas familias se sientan forzadas a abandonar sus países de origen y se pongan en peligro de caer en el actual sistema de Inmigración/Patrulla Fronteriza de los Estados Unidos. PETICIÓN PARA HACER DEL DDLM UN DÍA FESTIVO NACIONAL El 30 de octubre de 2020, la 45ª Administración de los Estados Unidos proclamó oficialmente el 1 de noviembre como Día Nacional de Conmemoración de los Estadounidenses Asesinados por Extranjeros Ilegales, coincidiendo directamente con la festividad del Día de los Muertos que tiene lugar del 1 al 2 de noviembre. Esta proclamación vino como un intento directo de sobrescribir y re-caracterizar la herencia de millones de hispanos y latinoamericanos, creando más división en todo el país, cambiando el enfoque de la familia, la comunidad y la unión al odio, el resentimiento y el separatismo. Nuestro objetivo este mes de noviembre es unir a nuestra comunidad en todo el país, incluyendo a organizadores, productores de festivales, activistas, artistas, funcionarios del gobierno local, conservadores de museos, historiadores y comunidades para solicitar al Congreso que denuncie oficialmente esta proclamación divisiva y establezca el Día de los Muertos como una fiesta reconocida dentro de los Estados Unidos.
