Description
Patagonia and Read & Run Chicago are teaming up again to bring another public transit-accessible trail run inspired by Lindsay Welbers’ Chicago Transit Hikes as part of Read & Run Chicago’s ongoing series! On this 3-mile guided trail run over marshes and oak forest landscapes in Cuba Marsh Forest Preserve, runners will glimpse a unique dry-hill prairie, see the progress of native species restoration and replanting of over 80,000 trees, and travel over a picturesque boardwalk. After the run, hear some Chicagoland grocery store history relevant to the park and enjoy snacks and a chance to win Patagonia swag with a donation to The Wetlands Initiative. Here’s what you need to know: MEET UP: Meet at 11am on Sunday, November 13 at the northeast corner of Citizen’s Park (where Citizen’s Park opens to the Cuba Marsh Forest Preserve trail). PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS: Take the Union Pacific Northwest Metra Line from Chicago OTC station at 9:30am to the Barrington station (Google Maps link here) arriving at 10:32am. Bike, Walk, or Run the 1.2 miles from the station to the starting location. For the return trip, we recommend the 1:18pm train from Barrington to Chicago OTC. Bikes are allowed on both trains. ROUTES & LENGTHS: This event will provide an easy-paced (~11:00min/mile) 3-mile guided run through Cuba Marsh. OPTIONAL READING: It is optional to read Welbers’ book prior to this run. We encourage you to borrow a copy from your local branch of the Chicago Public Library (here's how to get a card if you don't have one). If you prefer to purchase the book, please order directly from Belt Publishing using this link. POST-RUN: Enjoy complimentary snacks and water and enter into a donation-based chance to win Patagonia swag. After the event ends, we encourage runners to continue exploring Citizen’s Park (check out the tree house!), Barrington’s history and architecture, or heading to nearby Deer Grove Forest Preserve for more trails. All registered runners will receive email updates two days and four hours prior to the run. We will run rain or shine so long as it is safe.
