Very interesting. Here is my viewpoint on the foundation of the United States versus religion.
If I remember correctly, one of the reasons the colonists came to this continent was to escape the Church of England and a government run by the church. They had seen how that scenario played out, and it didn't work well. I am sure that they had different beliefs that the official Church of England, and may have been prosecuted for them. I can only presume that they felt that God intended people to be free to believe as they wish, without coercion by a national church or by a government, and here's why.
In the place typically known as the Garden of Eden, God told Adam & Eve that they could eat from any tree they want EXCEPT the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. But yet, He created that tree too. WHY? Simple reason: he wanted human beings to have a choice whether they wanted to have a relationship with Him or not. After all, it is much more meaningful to hear "I Love You" from someone who has a choice NOT to.
I believe that this is why the Founding Fathers wanted to setup a nation without a national religion.
Personally, I am not so sure about the concept of deism. I truly believe that God wants to interact with us. But don't worry, He is also a gentleman. He won't present Himself where He is not wanted either.
Just my 2 cents.
