A recent report by the Center for Public Safety Excellence on the 21st century of Fire and Emergency Services identifies the integration of multiple generations in the fire service as a future fire service challenge. Firefighters within the millennial generation are promoting into company officer positions and right behind them members of generation Z are becoming entry level firefighters.
This one-hour presentation will focus on the values, beliefs and backgrounds of the four generations working in the fire service today. Particular attention will be placed on addressing the intricacies of the millennial generation moving up the ranks of the fire service and generation Z entering our fire departments as new recruits. This presentation is applicable for all members of the fire service from chief officers to the new recruits.
Charlie Butterfield serves as Deputy Chief of Operations with the Meridian Fire Department in Meridian, Idaho. Chief Butterfield has 26 years of fire service experience. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fire and Emergency Services Administration, a Master’s degree in Education, is a graduate of the Executive Fire Officer’s program of the National Fire Academy and is a designated Chief Fire Officer by the Center for Public Safety Excellence. Chief Butterfield is an adjunct faculty professor at Idaho State University instructing Fire Service administration courses in enjoys speaking on generational challenges in the Fire Service.
