What does sanctuary for immigrants mean? How does it affect those who seek it and those who grant it? These questions and many more will be addressed by filmmaker and producer, Pilar Timplane, who will share her award-winning short film, SANTUARIO. SANTUARIO is the story of Juana Luz Tobar Ortega, a woman who found sanctuary at a church in North Carolina while evading a deportation sentence. The film follows Juana and her family in their first year of sanctuary. In this complicated immigration landscape, communities can be divided, or communities can be brought together under extraordinary circumstances. SANTUARIO is a documentary short about radical faith, one family's fight to stay together, and the true meaning of church in today's immigration climate.
Filmmaker, Pilar Timpane is based in Durham, NC where she runs Teacup Productions. Her work has focused on women's stories, immigration narratives, and religious communities with the aim of using storytelling for social change.
Led by Historian-in-Residence Dr. Gene T. Chávez, Nuestro Legado is a series of programs that examines historical events and personal stories that are part of or related to current exhibits. These programs are intended to enhance the museum visit.
