Description
Human trafficking is a significant human rights crime occurring throughout the United States and across the world. It has profound effects on the acute and long-term psychological, physical, and sexual health. Healthcare providers, including nurses, are one of the few professionals to interact with human trafficking victims while they are still in captivity. This continuing education talk will include three sections presented by a nurse to address the following topic areas: (1) information about human trafficking, (2) health implications of trafficking and screening procedures, and (3) legal options for trafficking victims including a review of resources for human trafficking victims. By the end of the activity, learners will be able to: Identify the types and venues of human trafficking in the United States. Describe potential warning signs that a victim of human trafficking might exhibit. Explore screening questions and tools that might be useful to identify victims of human trafficking within the healthcare setting. Identify the legal options available for a victim of human trafficking. Describe the need for comprehensive models of care for victims of human trafficking.
