Please join us at the Detroit Public Library Children's Department for a fun filled morning. Children and families will experience a rich cultural presentation of the Lion dance and it's history; opportunities to participate in activity stations, including origami, drumming, drawing, and a photo booth; and of course a live performance of the lion dance presented by the Michigan Lion Dance Team. The event is free and open to children or all ages and families.
The Michigan Lion Dance team is a cultural organization run by second-generation Taiwanese American students in the Detroit Metropolitan area. Our ages range from 12-17 years old, and we meet weekly at Michigan Chinese School, which Taiwanese Americans operate, to practice our routines.
Lion Dance has 1,900 years of history. In Chinese culture, lion dance performances bring health, joy, and auspiciousness to everyone watching. Our guests would especially like to bring good luck and health to people during the recovery from the pandemic.
