A Special Tribute Sadly, legendary drummer, Mr. Larry Clinton Peterson passed away on June 22, eight days short of his 69th birthday. Throughout his life, Larry worked tirelessly to carry on the very important work of Mr. Louis Armstrong, known as the Ambassador of Goodwill throughout the world, by encouraging the understanding and acceptance of peoples of all nations. He believed it is only in embracing our brothers and sisters of ALL cultures, that we ourselves grow into the fully remarkable human beings we were meant to be. In his honor, former band mates, University of Maine Alumni, Jon LeVeen, Marty Lang, and Jeff Taylor, along with esteemed drummer, Mike Auger, a Berklee College of Music Alumni formed the new, reborn LCP Jazz Ensemble, which will be performing on Thanksgiving. Jonathan LeVeen, Keyboardist, An alumnus of the University of Maine at Augusta, where he majored in Music, Jon, along with fellow students, formed the “eclectic dance band', Jones’n, which played bars, weddings, and functions throughout Maine and New Hampshire. He is a Massachusetts native who had his first regional hit with the band, “Your Mother” 40 years ago while attending high school in Connecticut. He was introduced to Larry by “Az-Iz” guitarist Marty Lang, and together they performed numerous gigs throughout the years. When The Larry Peterson Blues Project was formed to play the Maine Blues Festival in Naples, Jon was a regular performer. He has also been the keyboardist for The Larry Peterson Jazz Ensemble, and is “proud to help carry on Larry’s legacy.” Marty Lang, Guitarist An alumnus of the University of Maine at Augusta, where he majored in music, Marty learned from such greats as Chuck Winfield, Tom Hoffeman, Roswell Rudd, and Dave Dempsey. Throughout the years, he has played with The Country Squires (at the age of 17), Bob Seger and the Country Troubadours, (who had the honor of winning the number one country band in the state), Loose Connection, The Moondawgs, The New England Jazz Band, Jenny Jumpstart and the Capguns, and AZ IZ. He has performed with both The Larry Peterson Blues Project and The Larry Peterson Jazz Ensemble. Jeff Taylor, Electric Bassist, An alumnus of the University of Maine at Augusta where he majored in music, Jeff began his musical career at the age of 15. While at UMA, he studied, played, and recorded with the late Tom Hoffmann. He has performed with Al Delgado in a Latin jazz quartet, with fiddler Greg Boardman performing french and Irish music, and with the Don Pride Trio, playing jazz and original music. Along with guitarist John Smedley, he has been working on various original Fusion and Jazz projects in Central Maine with an eye to creating and supporting fellow musicians' compositional works. Jeff was proud to share the stage with Larry Peterson on multiple occasions throughout the years. One of the most memorable was a gig with jazz great Larry Coryell in Portland, Maine at which Mr. Coryell remarked on Larry's and the band's deep groove. He has performed with both The Larry Peterson Blues Project and The Larry Peterson Jazz Ensemble. Jeff is proud to carry on Larry's Jazz legacy at this wonderful Hilton Thanksgiving event! Mike Auger, Drummer An Alumnus of Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mike is best known to Maine audiences for his percussion work for a recurring Broadway review show at Merrill Auditorium. For 52 years he has played Jazz, blues, Broadway, R&B, soul, funk, country, and pop and worked as a percussionist for musicals. Mike was active in Band Camps and taught young students at the School of Rock, Virginia Beach, and Norfolk, during his six years in Virginia. While putting together a funk band that he hopes to have off the ground soon, he has been working with area bands. Although he never got the opportunity to work with Larry, Mike says, “It's an honor to be part of this event!” In Memory of a Life Well Lived Larry Clinton Peterson, Drummer In the span of sixty years, this classically trained horn player and drummer, performed with Leon Claxton's Harlem in Havana Review out of Tampa, touring the United States and Canada, playing ten shows a day, backing such greats as Sammy Davis, Jr., Mary Wells, Jimmy Durante, Cook and Brown, and many others. After moving to Maine, he worked with Bo Diddley and Larry Coryell, traveled to the JVC Jazz Festival in Saratoga Springs, NY with Joe Houston, and toured with Wilson Williams and the Platters throughout the south during the winter months. He was the drummer for several Maine bands as well; such as the Delta Knights, Red Light Review, Petting Zoo, and others. He was the percussionist for musical productions throughout Maine, both at the High School level and in Community Theaters. Upon his return from the Wilson Williams and the Platters tour, Maine Blues Festival founder, Kevin Kimball asked Larry to form a band under his own name. Thus, The Larry Peterson Blues Project was born and was a featured act on the Songo River Queen for many years. When the Hilton Garden Inn in Auburn asked Larry's jazz group to play for their Thanksgiving, Easter, and Mother's Day Brunches, he was honored and did his best to make management and guests happy.
