Women workers played a central role in the 19th-century textile industry. From the plucky Yankee "mill girls" of the 1840s to the Irish, German, and Italian immigrants who arrived later, women were the "essential workers" of their day. This talk will explore the various roles women played in the mills and in the evolution of the labor movement in East Dedham. Speaker, Judy Neiswander, has extensively researched the mills of East Dedham and will soon be publishing a book on the topic.
