Description

American Exceptionalism has been a hot-button topic since its inception, as citizens of young America attempted to make sense of its complicated history and put itself forward as a shining beacon of light in the world. The 19th century’s counter to this narrative, however, was even more nefarious: that the United States was not sent to spur freedom and equality, but the superiority of Anglo-Saxon superiority. Colin Woodard’s latest book takes a closer look at how our most treasured national myths came to be, and how those rosy stories of how we remember ourselves have been contested through the ages. Join us to discuss how this long-seated mythology still affects us today. This month's discussion will be led by Joan Pagliuca. A hybrid Zoom option will be available for those unable to attend in person. Members: $10 Nonmembers: $15 Zoom Only: $10 Doors will open at 6:30 PM for refreshments with a 7:00 start.
