For the first time ever, Camden FireWorks is embarking on storytelling using shadow theater and short film! The film project aims to connect and amplify the intergenerational experiences of the Camden Waterfront South neighborhood through collective storytelling and art making in shadow theater. By facilitating a series of weekend puppet-making workshops culminating in a recorded short film, our desire is that this project will open up the time, space, and togetherness for acknowledging the resilience of Waterfront South alongside its history of environmental injustice. Participants are welcome to join us in either or all of the workshops which will be facilitated by artist Maisie O'Brien. Workshops are scheduled from 1 to 3 pm on October 29, November 12 and November 19. This workshop series is good for participants* age 8 and older. *Participants will be listed as contributors to this project in the film credits. About the artist Maisie O’Brien (she/they) is a Philadelphia transplant from Dallas, TX and a Chinese-American adoptee. She has had the pleasure of presenting her original work with communities including Great Small Works, National Capital Puppetry Guild, Nasty Brutish & Short, Puppet Showplace Theater, Black Cherry Puppet Theater, The Baltimore Crankie Festival, Asian Arts Initiative, and Vox Populi Gallery, as well as developing shadows, puppets, sets, and costumes for collaborative projects with fellow storytellers in film, dance, music, and theater. Maisie has studied puppetry in academic and immersive contexts with Bread & Puppet Theater, The University of Connecticut, The O’Neill National Puppetry Conference, and the Chicago International Puppetry Festival Workshops. As a second generation arts educator they also work to encourage local young voices via puppetry and narrative arts workshops, summer camps, and festivals. This year they are looking forward to developing puppetry workshops around shadow-specific play, and coordinating partnerships with local groups in dialogue with land stewardship, food sovereignty, and sustainable art making.
