Our series of cooking classes is looking around the world for fresh ideas to incorporate more plants into our diet. This month we focus on Indian cuisine and make minor tweaks to bring traditional recipes in sync with modern nutrition science. Join Sarmila, as she shares easy plant-based ideas and cooks for you a healthy, delicious, easy-to-make dinner! Dinner's on us!!! Green Monster Smoothie is a real crowd-pleaser! Pears, apples, and grapes make this smoothie quite sweet, and you’ll be amazed at the secret powerhouse ingredient! So easy and refreshing that you can even get the kids to help make it. You will love it even if green drinks are new to you! Quick Black Bean Chili is rich in fiber, protein, anthocyanins, and lycopene, all nutrients that help support a healthy immune system and protect us from cancers. It is also quick and easy to prepare. Great for a busy weeknight and good enough for company. Kitchari is a delicious porridge-like mixture of Basmati rice and yellow moong dal (split mung beans) simmered in spices such as turmeric, cumin seeds, ginger, and black pepper. Most often served for lunch or dinner, it is also a well-loved comfort food often eaten during colds and flu. Braised Kale. Learn the secret to sauteing without oil with this hearty and flavorful dish. Who knew kale could be so simply prepared and so yummy? Sharmila Vedam is an accountant by profession but a passionate cook by choice. Due to her husband’s surprise diagnosis of a rare autoimmune disease that caused blindness in both eyes, Sharmila switched to a whole food plant-based lifestyle in 2016. She has thrived as a cook for the last six years, recreating primarily Indian dishes. Sharmila is certified in Plant-based Nutrition by Cornell University and is a Board Director and Treasurer of the Plant-Based Nutrition Movement. In-person Cooking Class & Dinner is FREE, but registration is required!
