Description

Race isn't always an easy thing to talk about, but that doesn't mean it's not a conversation worth having. In fact, it's imperative that we do talk about it. For some, the topic of race is a conversation of lived experience under suspicion. For some, it's been an academic exercise they try on and put away at will. For others, it's been an increasingly important part of their relational networks, conversations, and decision-making. For all of us, though, it's a topic that matters. And, the reality is, avoiding the topic simply because it's uncomfortable isn't a choice that everyone gets to make. Regardless of how you've shown up in the "race conversation" thus far, we invite you to sit down with us, have some pie and ice cream, and engage in roundtable conversations about who we are, how we show up in the world, and why that matters so much. In a world that seeks to bifurcate and polarize everything, there are actually lots of ways we're all deeply similar. And in spite of lots of "everyone matters" and "equity" messaging, there are lots of ways our experiences differ greatly. The truest truth might be nestled in the intersection of we're so different and we're so similar, all at the same time. The power of this understanding moves us from tolerance, integration, and assimilation toward inclusion, belonging, and community. That's what we want to explore. Join us for this connective and growth-oriented conversation. We'll have these two on-stage sharing conversation and tidbits from Sweet Potato or Pumpkin Pie: Conversations with My White Friends about Race.Concurrently with the on-stage dialogue attendees will hold their own roundtable conversations, responding to ideas from the stage, to prompts given at the tables, and to their own organic questions.
