Thirteen days after Franklin Roosevelt’s death new President Harry Truman received a report from Secretary of State Henry Stimson about the development of the first atomic bomb. Less than three months from this revelation, President Truman would have to make the decision whether or not to use the weapon against Japan. Historian Gary Midkiff examines the issues that affected Truman’s decision, the alternatives he had, the ineffective secret negotiations that took place, the pressures he felt and conclude with an evaluation of whether dropping the bomb on Hiroshima was the best decision Truman could have made.
