Smart phones... how smart do they have to be?

My 6 year old $200 smart phone sucks! I can't easily get onto the internet or upload photos... it's very time consuming deleting photos. Sometimes the icon to answer the phone gets lost so I lose the call. I use android Samsung... do I have to spend $1000 for a nice easy to use phone? I don't think I need all the snazy apps. I would like to hear your opinion. THANKS!
