Description
The prevalence of racial stressors and racial trauma among individuals of the BIPOC population can have a negative impact on social competencies as children and managing these stressors as adults. The historical background of the BIPOC population in America has its own distinct trajectory involving perceptions of others and its presentation within the media. Recent events have made it evident of the necessity to both recognize and broaden awareness of cultural diversity as it relates to providing play therapy services to Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) individuals. In an effort to provide culturally sensitive services, The Association for Play Therapy reviewed and modified current guidelines of credentialing to include training in culturally inclusive play therapy and anti-racist practices. Play therapists’ ability to improve their cultural competencies with diverse populations can enhance their ability to work with children from diverse backgrounds who experience discrimination due to their cultural and ethnic backgrounds. This workshop aligns with APT’s mission to enhance play therapists’ cultural awareness and competencies in providing play therapy services to BIPOC children. Learning Objectives: By the end of this course participants are able to: 1. define racial trauma and it’s impacts on children and presentation in the playroom. 2. identify the difference between racial stress and racial trauma and how it presents in the playroom 3. identify at least one play therapy strategy to facilitate the process of healing in the playroom.
