NEW YORK CITY — A pro-Trump mob's violent assault on the US Capitol amounted to a "failed coup" trying to steal democracy, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a searing statement. Cuomo deployed 1,000 members of the New York National Guard to Washington, D.C. following the unprecedented events on Wednesday. He did so at the request of U.S. National Guard leaders, and pledged New York will help secure the peaceful transition of power. Congress moved that transition forward early Thursday after members affirmed President-elect Joe Biden's win — an event Trump, and his supporters who swarmed the Capitol, sought to stop. "We must call this what it actually is: a failed attempt at a coup," Cuomo said in a statement. "This is the final chapter of an incompetent, cruel, and divisive administration that has trampled on the Constitution and the rule of law at every turn, and we won't let President Trump, the members of Congress who enable him, or the lawless mob that stormed our nation's Capitol steal our democracy. The election results are clear and the will of the American people will be carried out." New York National Guard members will be deployed for up to 14 days. Cuomo, in another statement, said the deployment will not impact the state's fight against the coronavirus.
