Rent to own Homes a Scam?

Are the RENT TO OWN homes I see listed (often through paid services) legit or a scam? Could you enter an agreement presuming that you will never actually own the home and simply benefit from reasonable or low rent for the time you are there? If so, why isn't this common knowledge? We have been in the same apartment for over 10 years and need more space. The buyers' market is not great in Portland right now and I do not know if this might be an option. Has anyone here bought a home this way or know of someone who did or tried to do so? I have zero first or second hand knowledge of this experience. All feedback appreciated.
