Tom's talk explores the theme of balance in climbing and life, and focusses on the ‘why.’ For example, why spend weeks traveling to remote mountainous regions of the planet, then spend days questing up unclimbed walls? What do we find up there? Tom’s ascents have received awards in the climbing world, but he explains why these aren’t motivating for him, and what he’s gained instead. Climbing ‘pushes’ him higher, and has steered his life. But it’s also pulled him to alien places and dark faces.
Tom Livingstone enjoys climbing in every form, but it’s the biggest and baddest alpine routes that have drawn him into the mountains for over a decade. He’s established first ascents around the world, from Alaskan granite to Rockies choss to Pakistan’s Karakorams. Although he grew up trad climbing in the UK, he now lives in Chamonix, France, where he tries - and fails - not to eat croissants every day.
