Rev Dr Martin Ritchie gained his PhD at the School of Divinity, University of Edinburgh, working with Prof Jane Dawson on the experience of worship in Reformation Scotland (1559-1617). His work shows that far from being severe, cerebral, drained of color and lacking emotion, worship in this period was full of energy, color, beauty and passion. This event combines short talks about the politics, religion, art, and culture of the time, plus the chance to hear recreations of the "smash hit" new metrical psalm settings which were the participative bedrock of the Reformed church in Europe.
