Announcing Newhallville Neighborhood Open Source ExhibitionSponsors: Artspace, CPEN, BAC, Farmington Canal Heritage Trail Association Doreen Abubakar, founder, and Executive Director of the Community Placemaking Engagement Network (CPEN) announces the participation of CPEN and the Newhallville Learning Corridor in Artspace New Haven's annual "Open Source" festival. Titled: AfroCentric Expression Newhallville EXHIBITION. Event day is Oct 28th, 4 pm- 6 pm, Music Mocktail and Light Refreshment. Artspace commissioned Jason Friedes, to design, build and install five billboards across the Learning Corridor, a rehabilitated greenspace formerly known as "The Mudhole." CPEN invites all to participate. The installation is part of Abubakar and CPEN's newest initiative, the Black Artist/Artisan Collaborative (BAC) CPEN will now have the built-in infrastructure to host art activities and events. The CPEN-BAC's Initiative: mission is to connect emerging Black Artists/Artisans of African descent to local opportunities and the development of their artistry. CPEN Inc. will provide an outdoor space to showcase and nurture creative awareness in others within the New Haven Community. The inaugural mixed media artist, Arizona Taylor is a Newhallville resident and CPEN's Curator for the event. This is the beginning of what Abubakar hopes will be a collaboration between Black artists/artisans and the inclusion of other neighborhoods within the city. This creative work seeks to counter the longstanding and citywide disinvestment in Newhallville, one of New Haven's oldest and most historic Black neighborhoods. Artspace New Haven's 2022 Open Source Festival runs from Oct. 21st through 30th across New Haven. Details and locations here.
