SECAUCUS, NJ — A Jersey City woman driving with a suspended license is accused of causing two different accidents in Secaucus Sunday night, said police, and police say she fled the scene after both.
The woman is Amanda Hernandez, 24, of Jersey City. She was arrested Tuesday, within 48 hours of the two crashes, and charged with assault by auto, leaving the scene of an accident, driving with a suspended license, plus hindering apprehension and reckless driving. They are all disorderly persons and motor vehicle offenses.
Secaucus police say her car first collided with another vehicle at 7:37 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Paterson Plank Road and County Avenue; she then fled the scene, said police. The driver of the other car suffered minor injuries, said police.
Secaucus police were called there for a report of a motor vehicle crash where one of the involved vehicles fled.
Moments later, Secaucus police were called to the 800 block of 8th Street on a report of another motor vehicle crash, this time into a fence and pole, where the car again fled the scene.
Vehicle parts left at both crash scenes and witness statements revealed it to be from the same vehicle, the damaged Kia pictured above.
Police with the Secaucus Police Traffic Bureau, under the leadership of Lieutenant Martin Moreda, tracked the Kia's ownership back to Hernandez.
Secaucus police worked with Jersey City police to make the arrest.
"The Secaucus Police Department is committed to solving hit-and-run crashes resulting in injuries to innocent motorists," said Secaucus Police Chief Dennis Miller.
