Description

What is the relationship between landscape architecture and health, dignity, and healing? How can landscape architecture offer a means to connect with place, and spaces to connect with each other? Can public space truly welcome all?The design of the outdoor spaces at the future City of Portland Homeless Services Center embraces these questions and more as it helps to provide low-barrier, temporary emergency shelter to individuals experiencing homelessness over the age of 18. Currently under construction, according to the City of Portland website, "the new Homeless Services Center will be open 24-hours a day, 7-days a week with on-site meals and a wide range of services including health and mental health care, substance use treatment, housing assistance, peer support, case management, employment assistance, and more." How can landscape architecture assist in this mission? Join us on a site tour as we explore these provocative yet enduring questions, as well as examine details and implementation of landscape architecture under construction through the lenses of materials, plants, program, circulation, access, and strategies to mitigate climate change. Led by Nick Aceto, ASLA, Aceto Landscape Architects . Join us outside! All are welcome, members and non-members, families and friends. BSLA is pursuing LACES accreditation for this tour. . That discussion features Addy Smith-Reiman of Portland Society for Architecture in conversation with Nick Aceto, ASLA; Johanna Cairns, ASLA; Steven Mansfield, ASLA; Grace McNeill; and Brian Townsend.
