Description

Join Seattle University and Immaculate Conception Church as we celebrate Black Catholic History Month! On November 19, 2022, we will host Tolton: From Slave to Priest, a powerful multi-media live production, filled with music, drama and inspiring performances. Actor Jim Coleman tells the story of Fr. Augustus Tolton, who was the first African American priest in the United States and is now being considered for sainthood by the Vatican. From his dramatic escape from slavery to his courageous struggle in the face of prejudice, Fr. Tolton’s inspiring life centers around the message of reconciliation, hope, and Christ's all-encompassing love. The performance is filled with all the elements of professional theater, runs 75 minutes and is suitable for ages 10 and up. Fr. Augustus Tolton's life was one of hidden holiness. His cause for canonization has been presented to the Vatican and is moving forward quickly. This event is sponsored and hosted by Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Black Catholic Advisory Circle, Seattle University's Campus Ministry, and Seattle University's Institute for Catholic Thought and Culture. Canonization In 2010, Cardinal Francis George announced the Augustus Tolton cause for canonization for sainthood. Most recently, on June 11, 2019, Pope Francis advanced the Cause for Sainthood of The Servant of God Augustus Tolton by signing a decree issued by the Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints. Upon the declaration of this decree by the Pope, Tolton is deemed “Venerable” which formally means he lived the theological virtues of faith, hope and charity and the cardinal virtues of prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance at a heroic level.
