Description

Hoarding disorder is a potentially life-threatening and common mental disorder with significant negative impacts upon individuals, families, and communities at large. It is also notoriously difficult to treat, in part due to poor insight and low motivation to change. Harm Reduction has been demonstrated as an effective intervention for hoarding when clinical treatment is not. This interactive workshop is geared toward clinical and human service professionals with a pre-existing understanding of hoarding disorder. Primary focus will be upon what “successful” intervention with hoarding looks like and how—collaboratively—we get there. Expect to hear, “Do you want to be right or do you want to be effective?,” a lot. OBJECTIVES By the end of this workshop, participants will: 1. Possess an expanded breadth and depth of knowledge of the consequences of hoarding, including homelessness and death 2. Have a clear working conceptualization of Harm Reduction for hoarding 3. Be able to list the benefits of harm reduction intervention vs clinical intervention 4. Be capable of delineating between Harm Reduction and CBT for hoarding disorder and discern which intervention is most appropriate for their client 5. Possess increased knowledge of the roles and relationships between an individual’s hoarding behavior and local governmental and housing authorities 6. Be able to engage in harm reduction intervention with their client, including how to establish a multi-disciplinary harm reduction intervention team Registration: 8:30AM Event: 9:00AM - 12:15PM Limited Space Available - 100 registrants This workshop has been approved by the State of Ohio, Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board for 3.0 hours of CEU’s for Counselors and Social Workers #RCS011804; Nurses by reciprocity.
